In 1959 Mary and Bob Jeffery
created a home where children with developmental
disabilities could be happy. Today, that tradition
continues. Below are some testimonials from family members
about Peppermint Ridge. |

November 2007
In 1992, 27-year-old Michael was happy living with us
in Redondo Beach while 31-year-old Kathy was living independently with a
roommate in San Pedro. While Michael was content, Kathy had a contentious
relationship with her roommate. Because their children had developmental
disabilities, they knew they would need to find a place where their children
could thrive and be well cared for when they no longer able to support them.
Hearing about the Peppermint Ridge, I decided to check it out.
I liked the people I met
and was impressed with the homes that I saw. After talking with Barbara, we
decided to put Michael’s name on the waiting list. About six months later,
an opening occurred in C-Home and Mike moved in. Kathy, who likes to live
independently, moved to Corona in 1995 and became a client of the supported
living program (VIP). Later, Kathy got a job in the Ridge’s housekeeping
department.
“Michael and Kathy have
grown so much since coming to Peppermint Ridge. It was difficult to let go,
but it was the best thing for them” says Barbara. “We know the Ridge will
do its best to take care of them for us, and we know that they are happy”
says Dennis.

July 2003Dear Mr.
Garrett:
Hi! My husband Jon and I met you on Monday, July 7, '03 when we came to
visit my brother, David Smelker, who lives in Garrison home.
We enjoyed our tour and visit with Jean Powers and David very much.
My brother, David,
has been a true inspiration to me. It has been eight years since I have
been able to see him, and the first thing I noticed, of course, is that
David is now as tall as I am -- he's healthy and glowing -- always
with a big smile. We gave each other the biggest hug one could ever
receive. My husband and I enjoyed meeting his friends, the staff at
Garrison and at the Peppermint Ridge office. Everyone was so sweet to us
and made us feel right at home. Thanks, everyone.
I can remember David used to be afraid of situations in the past. Now he
handles himself so confidently, very maturely, and understands everything
you say. My brother also knows and experiences the true meaning of life
and shows it in everything he does. He loves where he lives, he loves the
staff, his friends -- he loves to swim, camp, shop and help anyone in
need. When our parents died in '92 and '94, I was so glad to have David.
He has and always will be my strength, my teacher and my best friend.
I'm so grateful and proud of the teachers and staff that have made David
the remarkable young man he has become. Being with David is such a joy,
like a breath of fresh air for me.
In closing, David, I want to say to you, keep up your good work. Know that
Mom and Dad are smiling over us in Heaven, and continue teaching others
the meaning of love and living life to it's fullest! You are without a
doubt, an "Angel" sent from above.
